We are already planning our group Halloween costume for this year, so I thought I’d give some inspiration to any of you looking for a themed Halloween costume idea for your group of family or friends.
Below are 27 group costume ideas I pulled from previous years of my own family’s costumes, Aubri’s family’s costumes, and costume ideas shared with me by my friends. I am so impressed by their creativity and can’t wait for you to see their ideas and get inspiration!

1. Zoo Animals
Last year for Halloween, my family decided to keep it easy and just be zoo animals. (We had just moved and were still getting settled, so it felt like zoo.) As a bonus, our costumes were onesie pajamas so nice and comfy for the kids (and adults haha). Here are links to the costumes: Elephant, Penguin, Giraffe, Bear, and Lion Mane.
2. Batman, Batgirl, and Robin (the Sidekick… literally)
There’s no denying my son is obsessed with Batman. So we fulfilled all of his 2 year old dreams by dressing up at Batman and Batgirl. I was totally pregnant (one week away from having our baby girl), so I thought it was only appropriate to dress her up as my literal side kick, Robin.
We got my husband’s Batman t-shirt on Amazon, and I made mine from taping felt onto a black shirt. We got our boy a muscled Batman costume, but he opted for just wearing his Batman pajamas. Works for me haha.
3. A Crazy Cat Lady and Her Cats
I have no idea where this crazy cat lady costume idea started. But after a quick run to the dollar store, we had our cat ears, tails, and “paws” (mittens). A little makeup completed the look. And my husband’s cat shirt and the rest of his getup came from Goodwill. Our poor dog played along too.
4. Minions & Gru
For their group Halloween costume a couple years back, Aubri and her husband dressed up as minions with a DIY paper plate eyeballs and suspenders. Then they applied some heavy eyebrows on their girl for a hilarious Gru. Such a cute, easy costume idea!
5. Goldilocks and the Three Bears
This is a great group Halloween costume idea if you have a group of four. Goldilocks and the three bears can be a quick and easy DIY costume. I love Aubri’s bear ears she did with her hair, but the headband ears on her husband work well too!
6. Things 1, 2, 3, and 4
In college, Aubri and I dressed up as Dr. Seuss Things with our roommates, but you could easily do this with your family. Maybe you could have the parents be cats in the hat and the kids be the things!
We had these shirts from Disneyland, but they are available on Amazon (like this one here), or a cheaper way to do it is to DIY your own onto a red t-shirt with these Things 1-6 heat transfer vinyl sheets. Then a ratted hair nest with some blue hair spray is all you’ll need.
7. The Three Blind Mice
This was another cheap college group Halloween costume. My brother, roommate, and I dressed up after the classic nursery rhyme the three blind mice with white, black, and brown outfits, DIY paper ears on headbands, sunglasses, easy makeup, and canes. You can cheaply get a cane on Amazon. If you have four people in your group, you can add in the farmer’s wife. If you’ve got five, add the farmer too.
8. The Greatest Showman
This is a movie with such fun, unique characters. Grab a P. T. Barnum costume on Amazon, Anne Wheeler pink wig and purple leotard, and a Stratton general costume, and you’re set! If you have more members on your group you can add in the Bearded Lady, the Dog Boy, Jenny Lind, etc.
9. Reversed Roles
If you’ve got little babies or little kids, this could be a fun group Halloween costume idea! Have the grownups dress us like babies (with a onesie like this), and have the babies dress up like adults (with something like this)!
10. The Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz has a bunch of fun, recognizable characters you can use in your group Halloween costume. Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, Toto, the Wicked Witch, Glinda, the winged monkeys, the munchins, etc. DIY your own costumes (like spray painting a funnel silver for the Tin Man) or grab some off of Amazon.
11. Star Wars
Are you a Star Wars fan? Grab a lightsaber and Jedi costume, or dress up as Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Yoda, Ewok, or more!
12. Robot Family
DIY a cute group Halloween costume with boxes and fun add-ons and become a cute robot family. Add some shiny touches with silver leggings and aluminum duct vents. The possibilities are endless!
13. Princess and the Pea
I love this group Halloween costume idea! My clever friend dressed herself up as a princess, her baby up as a pea pod, and her husband up as a mattress. I’d never seen this idea before and you could replicate with a pea pod costume, an old prom dress or new princess dress and princess crown, and a DIY mattress or bed costume.
14. Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man and Ghosts
These DIY Halloween costumes are the perfect family event if you have kids in tow. Dress in black, white, or yellow; make cardboard Pac-Mans (or get a costume like this one), and make an easy DIY ghost costume (or get ghost t-shirts like these). The traditional ghost colors are red, pink, cyan blue, and orange. As an added bonus, this group costume idea gives you an excuse to run away from your kids all evening. 😉
15. Inside Out Emotions
Got a group of five? Dress up as the five inside out emotions. Anger = red wig with a white shirt and tie. Disgust = green wig with a purple neck scarf and green belted dress. Fear = potentially purple short wig and curly q on top with a red bow tie and thick worried eyebrows, a tucked in houndstooth shirt, and jeans. Sadness = dark blue wig with big glasses and a white sweater turtleneck and jeans. Joy = short blue wig with a yellow dress.
If you’ve got a 6th have them dress up as the elephant Bing Bong.
16. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck
Mickey and Minnie are super recognizable and it’s an easy group Halloween costume to pull off. Grab some mouse ears, a Minnie Mouse dress, and all you have to do is add is few DIY touches. Other character adds for your group could be: Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and Pluto.
17. Pilot, Flight Attendant, and Cloud
How adorable is this group Halloween costume idea?! A pilot is an easy costume with tucked in white shirt and dark blue slacks, pilot hat, and aviators. The flight attendant needs a hostess hat, a navy blue dress suit, and nylons. The cloud could be a simple DIY white puffy cloud.
If you have a bigger group, consider adding an airplane, a ramp agent (with orange sticks and vest), a suitcase, travelers/tourists, etc.
18. Plants vs. Zombies
This video game is full of character options. My talented friend Danielle made all of her boys peashooter costumes (click here for her tutorial) and dressed her husband up as a zombie. Other character options include: Sunflower, Cherry Bomb, Chomper, Mushroom, etc.
19. Jurassic World
I had two different friends pull off the Jurassic World themed group costume. Chelsea (at her blog Life with my Littles), dressed all of her kids up in raptor costumes. Read her blog post here with links to their costumes and her advice. Alyssa dressed their cute dog up as a raptor with a dog costume like this one.
20. Circus
This group Halloween costume idea has endless possibilities! Pick from lion and lion tamer, acrobat, mime, clown, fortuneteller, strong man, monkey and/or elephant, and peanuts.
21. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood
A popular kid TV show, Daniel Tiger with his gang Prince Wednesday, O the Owl, Katerina, Miss Elaina, Music Man Stan, and other characters will be a hit with the little kids on Halloween!
22. Michael Jackson Evolution
This hilarious Michael Jackson themed costume by my friend, Arianna, is perfect for her adorable, racially-mixed family. Starting from little Michael with an afro to the “Thriller” Michael with his classic red jacket and ending with the “This is It” MJ with his black fedora hat. Such a clever idea!
23. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, and the Great Pumpkin make an appearance in this cute group Halloween costume. Linus, Pig-Pen, and other Charlie Brown characters could be added if you have a bigger group.
24. Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland
The modern twist on the classic Alice in Wonderland, this version has the Tim Burton style. You can include characters like the Mad Hatter (with the hat and attached wig), the Queen of Hearts (with her red heart hair and crown), Alice (with blonde hair and blue dress), the White Rabbit, the White Queen, Tweedle dee and Tweedle dum, etc.
25. Frida and Mexico
Yep, if you’re recognizing my talented friend again it’s because she and her family come up with the funnest group Halloween costume ideas. Last year, they dressed up in a Viva la Mexico theme. She was Frida, her husband was a mariachi man, and her boys were a taco and a pinata.
26. Back to the Future
Lovin’ this family group Halloween costume. Back to the Future characters including: Marty McFly with his trademark puffy jacket, Doc Brown with his crazy hair, and Jennifer Parker. They get a bonus gold star for converting their wagon into a DMC DeLorean–the classic car from Back to the Future.
27. Farmers, a Rabbit, and a Carrot
Got some boots and a plaid shirt? Dress up as farmers and dress your kids up as a rabbit, a carrot, or other farm-themed costume. Other ideas include: a scarecrow, a chicken/cow/pig/sheep, a pea pod, etc.
