Jake and I live in Seattle, WA. It’s a fun city surrounded by amazing water, greenery, and mountains. (Read: kayaking, camping, and hiking.) We have two kids in tow now, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking advantage of the weekend to adventure and explore a little piece of nature.
One of our recent favorite places to adventure is Discovery Park. It’s a short 10 minute drive from our city condo…. crazy that such a beautiful stretch of nature can be so close to the busy Seattle city! It’s hard to pass up the close proximity so that our kids can get back for their naps. But we can’t get enough of Discovery Park, and we never regret heading there for some exploring.
Our Discovery Park Adventure
Let me take you on our family’s outdoor adventure through Discovery Park.
The Preparation
Jake and I are adventurers. We’ve been married a little over 5 years now and our time together has been full of memorable outdoor moments: ice climbing in Alaska, stargazing in Greece, mountain biking in Colorado, scuba diving in Cozumel, sunset chasing in Sydney, sky diving in Utah, etc. Nothing beats some quality time with mother nature. Except for some quality time with mother nature AND some good food. In all of those places, Jake and I also shared some great food together. Because food = life. And just because we go on adventures where we have to pack our food with us, doesn’t mean we have to skimp on quality.
With that said, after grabbing our pack we swung past Whole Foods for some Creminelli Fine Meats™ Snack Trays. (Check out the Creminelli website and Instagram page. We got our snack trays from the Sliced Meats section in Whole Foods, but they can be found at some Kroger stores, Whole Foods, Starbucks, and Targets.) Then we were ready to adventure!
The Trees
We started off our adventure on one of the walking trails that twists through the lush, mossy trees. We like starting at the south entrance and walking along the Loop Trail because it’s close to easy street parking, and the trail winds through super cool trees. Of course, our little boy was constantly running ahead and leading the pack.
I just love trees in Seattle in the springtime. They are covered with beautiful moss. The branches and trunks are as beautiful as the leaves! After walking through a canopy of trees for a while, it opens up a bit and to the right there are some fields.
The Beach & Lighthouse
After hiking for a ways and veering off onto the South Beach Trail and road, we reached West Point Light House Beach. It’s covered with rocks and driftwood–an exploration haven for a two-year-old boy. Our son loved throwing rocks in the water, and we all played around for a bit.
There is an old, cool lighthouse there called West Point Lighthouse. It began operating back in the 1800’s… pretty cool!
The Snack Break
Halfway through our adventure, and we were ready to refuel! How appropriate that in Discovery Park we were snacking on Creminelli…. whose hashtag is #DiscoverFood. I love that Creminelli shares our love of exceptional food. They care about quality, and it shows. We’ve been to Europe, and Creminelli is bringing a little taste of it to America. They make genuine, artisan Italian salami and meats by hand from natural pork raised on family farms. (The farms practice sustainable agriculture which, yep, means no antibiotics, no growth stimulants, and no animal derivatives in the feed.) And their food is handcrafted with organic and imported Italian spices.
I also love that Creminelli is based out of SLC, Utah because I’m from there! If you’re unfamiliar with Creminelli, then check out their home page.
We love protein-packed snacks that fuel our on-the-go adventures, and Creminelli does us good. We like to bring protein snacks for a couple reasons…. Protein takes longer for a body to process than carb-heavy foods do, so it helps us feel full longer. It’s good at balancing out blood sugar levels too which is good because Jake gets migraines when his blood sugar drops suddenly. As an added bonus, our toddler loves them! And even though it’s hard to share, we let our dog, Moose, have a few nibbles too.
We love the Felino & Manchego snack pack because it’s the perfect pairing of Felino salami and a mild sheep’s milk cheese from Spain. Super delicious combo! The Calabrese was mildly spicy and really flavorful. Honestly, all of their stuff is really good.
The Viewpoint
After our snack, the kids were about done exploring, so we started heading back to the car. On the way back, we stopped by a viewpoint with stunning views of Puget Sound. There were some ferry boats on the water that we watched for a bit before finishing our hike.
Hope you enjoyed following our adventure through Discovery Park! Now get outside and have your own adventure! You can check out the Creminelli Instagram page for other adventure ideas.
