Hello, April! Spring is officially here, so we’ve got spring cleaning on our minds. Spring cleaning is all about throwing out, updating, beautifying, and simplifying. Our 5 tips for a minimalist closet below will help you refresh your closet, leaving you feeling refreshed yourself!

5 tip for a minimalist closet

5 Tips for a Minimalist Closet

1. Let go of clothes that don’t fit.

I often see people hanging onto a pair of pants that they used to fit into before [fill in the blank]. They say it is there to motivate them to lose weight. I think motivation is great, but I think more than motivating them, it is criticizing them and their current state. Don’t hold on to “someday clothes.” Don’t keep waiting for tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes. Enjoy your life today and the stage you are in. You deserve to wear clothes that fit. And your closet deserves to only hold clothes that fit you.

By clearing out all the “someday clothes,” you can eliminate the extra baggage that is hanging around in your closet and in the back of your mind. This will help clear up your mind and your closet at the same time, giving you more energy in the process!

2. Donate clothes you aren’t drawn to.

As a professional organizer, I would tell my clients that if they haven’t used something in the past year to get rid of it. If you share a closet with someone, like your spouse, get them on board. Go through and get rid of what you don’t wear. If you’re not going to wear it, then why is it still hanging around taking up space in your closet and life? Keep what you love and what you wear, because they should be the same thing.

Is it hard for you to remember which clothes you have worn within a year? One trick you can do is to turn all the hangers backwards. By the end of the year, any hangers still facing backwards should be thrown out (aka donated)! The fact that the hanger is still backwards is proof that that piece of clothing hasn’t been worn.

One extra bonus of doing this step is that you can receive tax deductions for items donated. So holding onto a bunch of old clothes might not just be costing you precious space, it could be costing you money too!

3. Invest in multi-functional clothing.

Less is more. Right? One big way to have a more minimalist closet: invest in clothes that can be used in more than one situation and do more than one job. An awesome example of this is Amanda Joy & Co’s patent-pending extendable slip system. This is 1 slip that changes to 3 different lengths. (We personally like it because we’re Mormon, and as you can see it goes past the knee so it covers our LDS garments nicely.) It also comes with a cap sleeve attached. (See the photo below which shows the entire slip!)

Aside from the fact that it’s multi-functional, we love that this extendable slip system is made in the US, tagless, and has a reversible neckline. But probably the neatest thing is that there are affirmations printed on the inside! Amanda Joy & Co is all about mindfulness. Their CEO, Amanda, decided to print affirmations inside all of their products. She did this, so we would remember to be mindful about our thoughts and what you think about ourselves. Talk about a mental spring cleaning! Amanda Joy & Co hope you put on your clothing and think positively about yourself and that you are creating your life.

4. Stick with a neutral foundation.

I have found that having a minimalist closet actually makes it easier to be well-dressed. This is because minimalist closets have critical foundation pieces (the clothing you wear all the time, like jeans) that act as the building blocks for the rest of the wardrobe. Have your foundation clothing be mostly neutral colors. Then add variety with different textures and pops of color through layering or accessories.

Building your wardrobe from a neutral foundation will give you the most number of unique outfits/looks for the least number of clothing items. Not only does this approach help you put together a fabulous outfit in less time, it saves money and space!

5. Store seasonal clothing elsewhere.

The last of our tips for a minimalist closet: store seasonal clothing somewhere else. Seasonal clothing are the pieces of your wardrobe that aren’t used all year long (like winter coats, ugly Christmas sweater, and swimming suits). Remove closet clutter by packing up season-specific clothing you won’t be using anytime soon and storing them elsewhere. Storage areas should be away from daily use and traffic.
