Campfire Spread & Making Memories

Our family gathers around the backyard campfire on summer evenings. The crackle of the fire, the swapping of stories, and the cool taste of A&W® Root Beer is pure joy! One of the first dates with my now husband was to a bonfire. Now, our two girls, and occasionally our friends and extended family, join us around the fire pit and next to it for a delicious campfire spread.

Years of Campfires

My husband, Nathaniel, and I share a love of the outdoors. So naturally, we have spent many summer nights building campfires since we first met. The crackle of the fire, the swapping of hero stories, the sharing of memories, the playing of guitar and singing of campfire songs, and the nostalgia of a delicious campfire spread is as good as it gets! Now we have two girls that we get to share these campfire experiences with. Below are just three memories around the campfire as our family has grown over the past 8 years.

Preparing for a Campfire

After a looong and record-breaking winter here in Minnesota this year, we were so ready to bust outside and enjoy an evening together…campfire style! One thing I love about feeding family and friends around a campfire is that the food prep is so so easy. It took just one quick trip to Walmart to grab some A&W Root Beer as well as some other campfire spread essentials.

Campfire Spread

The perfect campfire spread includes the following items: roasted hot dogs & sausages with toppings and buns, potato salad, watermelon, chips, A&W Root Beer, and s’mores. It’s hard to believe that a campfire spread this mouthwatering that can be enjoyed for hours only requires a few minutes to prepare!

Here are some pro tips for your campfire spread:

  • Remember to grab serving utensils before heading outside
  • Make sure there is plenty of food (it’s better to have too much than not enough)
  • Bring a large cooler with ice in it (both to chill the A&W Root Beer and watermelon as well as to keep the potato salad and hot dogs/sausages from going bad)
  • Make it easier on yourself by using paper plates, paper napkins, and plastic utensils for quick-and-easy cleanup
  • Remember that you can burn paper but not plastic once you’re done eating
  • Keep in mind that it’s okay to let kids have dessert first every once and a while…so go ahead and put out the s’more fixings and just go with the flow

Making Memories

This is only our youngest daughter’s second summer with campfires! So we were thrilled to get outside and teach her the ropes. Not only do we teach our kids to how make a mean hot dog, enjoy a nice cold A&W Root Beer, and roast the perfect marshmallow, we instill within them a love of the outdoors and, most importantly, of family.

We have also done some fun, memory-building activities around the campfire over the years! Here are a few game and activity ideas:

  • Hammocking
  • Ladder toss
  • Cornhole
  • Scary storytelling
  • Truth Or Dare
  • Campfire songs with guitar
  • Bubbles
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Simon Says
