When we were kids, my siblings and I had an awesome babysitter. One night, he showed us how to make a recipe that would become a family favorite: tuna bunwiches, or just “bunwiches” as we call it. Like sandwiches but on buns.
Making these open-faced tuna melt bunwiches is so easy that even a kid can do it (if they’re old enough to safely operate an oven), but as an adult I still have it in our dinner rotation. They’re best for those nights when you are tired and need to get dinner on the table quickly. Or for when you have leftover hamburger buns that you don’t know what to do with. With just a few ingredients and about 10 minutes you’re ready to eat!
Bunwiches Ingredients
- Hamburger buns
- 2 cans tuna
- Mayonnaise
- Cheddar cheese
Feel free to add any other toppings or spices your family loves! This is just the bare basics recipe. Spices we like to add sometimes are garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Tip: If your kids don’t like tuna, substitute the canned tuna with canned chicken.
Bunwiches Directions
Place open hamburger buns face up on a baking sheet. Tip: put tin foil on your baking sheet first for even easier cleanup.
Mix tuna and mayonnaise in a bowl. I like to use a fork and smash the tuna as I mix. Then spread the tuna mixture on to the hamburger buns.
Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top of the tuna mixture.
Put in the oven and broil on high for 5-10 mins until cheese starts turning golden brown on top. I had mine in there for 9:30, but the right amount of time depends on your oven. So keep a close eye on it!
When your bunwiches are golden brown, take them out, plate, and serve.
