Some Background Info About Temples
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, temples play an important part of our family. (If you want to learn more about why Latter-day Saints build temples, click here for a rundown.) Below is a picture of us standing (and kissing) in front of the iconic Salt Lake City, Utah temple where we were married for eternity (not just until death do us part).
We try to frequently visit a temple to perform service and work there. Earlier this year we realized we had been to quite a few temples in the United States. We know others who make it a personal challenge to visit as many different temples as they can. Because of this, the idea of the temples scratch off map was born and we have been working to make it a reality.
The Temples Scratch Off Map Design
Admittedly, the scratch map idea is not new. Chances are you have seen other scratch maps for visiting the states in the US or countries in the world. This is a similar idea in that the owner can track the temples they have visited.
Our map measures 17″ x 24″ and was designed by our dear friend Tessa Blackham, a BYU illustration alumna and talented children’s book illustrator. The temples in our scratch map come are covered by a gold layer that can be easily scratched off (with an included scratch tool, a.k.a. guitar pick).
Because we can’t help ourselves, here is a sneak peek of some of her temple drawings underneath the gold layer. You’ll notice all the temples are hand drawn. Didn’t Tessa do such a beautiful job?!
