Homemade Sweet Horchata Recipe
If you’re reading this recipe you’ve probably tried horchata somewhere (a restaurant?) and want to learn how to make this nectar from the gods (yes, horchata is that good) yourself. Well, we’re excited to share our horchata recipe with you and tell you the simple ingredients and easy directions you’ll need to make and enjoy horchata at home.
Horchata Recipe: Ingredients
The following ingredients can be picked up at any general grocery store.
1 cup uncooked white long-grain rice
5 cups water
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 – 2/3 cup white sugar (to taste)
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
You will also need cheesecloth or another fine strainer.
Horchata Recipe: Directions
Here is our easy step-by-step directions for how to make your own Mexican horchata.
Step 1) Pulse
Pulse rice, a cinnamon stick, and water in a blender for about 1 minute. (The rice should not be finely ground but coarsely ground.)
Step 2) Soak
Let this mixture sit for a few hours at room temperature. You are letting the water soak up the rice and cinnamon flavors.
Step 3) Strain
Pour the mixture through cheesecloth into a pitcher to strain out the liquid. The cheesecloth helps keep out any pieces of rice or cinnamon. Give the cheesecloth a squeeze until you have collected all of the liquid in your pitcher.
Step 4) Add + Stir
Add the milk, sugar (we like using 1/2 cup), and vanilla into your pitcher and stir until blended.
Step 5) Chill
Chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve. If you would like, sprinkle a little cinnamon powder on top (see picture for reference) as garnish and for an added cinnamon taste.
