We are already planning our family’s Halloween costume for this year, so I thought I’d give some inspiration to any of you looking for a themed couple Halloween costume idea for you and your spouse of significant other.

Below are 21 couple Halloween costume ideas I pulled from previous years of my own costumes and costume ideas shared with me by my friends. I am so impressed by their creativity and can’t wait for you to see their ideas and get inspiration!

1. Awkward Family Photo
We all know the cringe-worthy awkward family photos floating around the internet. Haha this is probably my favorite couple Halloween costume to date. We got to dress up in ridiculous outfits from Goodwill (my husband normally wouldn’t be caught dead in a turtleneck) and pose in hilarious ways. It was a hit!
2. Publishers Clearing House and the Winner
People know the Publishers Clearing House for their sweepstakes. They would show up at people’s front doors with a big check and balloons, surprising the winner. One Halloween we needed a quick costume and threw this together with some balloons and hair rollers.
3. 101 Dalmatians
Disney’s 101 Dalmatians is widely recognizable. As a couple, you can dress up as Cruella de Vil and a Dalmatian. If you don’t get a full Cruella de Vil costume, at least be sure to get a wig of her classic half-white-half-black hair.
4. Bandits
My friend, Gloria, who did a DIY version of this couple Halloween costume theme idea said, “A pair of bandits was so easy to do! Money bags, a kids mask, striped shirt and black gloves!” Amazon has a bunch of options from full-body costumes to fake money bags with a robber mask to black and white striped shirts.
5. Mary Poppins & Bert
Mary Poppins and Bert are a fun Disney duo. Click here for some Mary Poppins costume inspiration. Bert is an easy DIY costume–just add some “chimney soot” to your face with makeup, wear a dark vest, and put on a flat cap. For a full-on Bert costume, check out this one complete with a chimney sweep broom.
6. Jane Austen’s Lizzy and Mr. Darcy
Jane Austen’s classic book Pride and Prejudice tells the cute love story of Elizabeth Bennet (Lizzy) and Mr. Darcy. The 19th century setting makes for fun costumes. Recreate Lizzy’s puffy sleeves, bonnet, and pulled-back ringlets. For Mr. Darcy, wear a tailcoat, pop the collar of your white button-up shirt, add an ascot, and wear a top hat. For a nice touch, draw on or grow out some sideburns.
7. Magician and a White Rabbit
I love this couple Halloween costume idea. Grab a magician costume (or simple add a bowtie, top hat, and magic wand to your Sunday suit). For the white rabbit (from the classic magician move of pulling a white rabbit out of his hat), dress in white and add some bunny ears, tail, and face makeup.
8. Ghostbusters & Stay Puft
My friend Lizzie said, “I was pregnant and pudgy looking so my husband built a proton pack and dressed as a ghostbuster. Clearly I was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Woman.” I that she embraced her pregnant self and rolled with it! Her DIY costume with her chef hat hack. If you don’t want to DIY, here is a cute Stay Puft costume for women. Here is a men’s and women’s Ghostbusters costume both with inflatable backpacks.
9. Pam & Jim from “The Office”
My cousin and her husband nailed this couple Halloween costume. Pam’s half-up hair, pink button-up shirt, and cardigan, and Jim’s winged hair, button-up shirt, and tie. They even wore Dunder Mufflin name tags. Here are badges for Pam and Jim if you want a lanyard-style name tag.
10. Prison Guard & Inmate
Love this opposites prison guard and inmate costume. There are a bunch of prison inmate costumes on Amazon (or a DIY would be easy) and prison guard costumes. My friend’s coffee and doughnut touch for this couple Halloween costume is hilarious!
11. Soap and Loofah
I’m a big fan of easy DIY couple Halloween costume ideas, and this one is genius! A simple white t-shirt with “Soap” taped on, and a purple shirt with purple tulle fabric bunched on make this cute couple’s costume complete! If you don’t want to DIY, here is a pair of soap and loofah costumes available on Amazon.
12. Ronald McDonald & French Fries
If you don’t mind clowns, this would be a hilarious couple Halloween costume. Grab a Ronald McDonald costume and a French Fries costume and you’ll be keeping people hungry all night!
13. Mario & Luigi
This duo is a classic. From the video game “Mario Kart,” Mario is red and Luigi is green. Amazon has many costume options including full-outfit costumes and just the red & green hats with M & L on them. If you do DIY your costume, remember to add some fake mustaches to your overalls and baseball cap look.
14. Punny Costume (Space Needle)
This couple went with a simple but punny costume. The Space Needle, an iconic building in Seattle where they live, was their inspiration. One dressed up as “Space” and the other as a “Needle.” Simple t-shirts did the trick. Consider doing a punny couple Halloween costume like this with something meaningful to you and/or to your area.
15. Peter Pan & Wendy
Oh my goodness isn’t this such a cute couple Halloween costume idea? Have the man wear the green leggings for a change. DIY your costume with a cut green t-shirt, green leggings, and a Peter Pan hat, or get one ready to go here. For Wendy’s costume, wear a blue dress and matching hair bow or grab one here.
16. Pirate & Shark
Shark attack! Grab a pirate costume and a shark costume to recreate this clever couple Halloween costume idea.
17. Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland
The modern twist on the classic Alice in Wonderland, this version has the Tim Burton style. Dress up like the Mad Hatter (with the hat and attached wig) and the Queen of Hearts (with her red heart hair and crown).
18. Tangled Rapunzel & Flynn Rider
This thrifty couple DIYed their Tangled-themed costumes by piecing together items from Deseret Industries (a Goodwill equivalent). My friend said, “My wife made the costumes from the DI. And made the wig from yarn.” If you don’t have time to DIY costumes, get a Rapunzel dress, wig, and Pascal, and a Flynn Rider costume here.
19. Scooby Doo & Shaggy
What a cartoon classic! My friends did such a simple DIY on this couple Halloween costume idea! Make a box of Scooby Snacks for Shaggy to hold, and put a collar and ears on Scooby and you’re good to go! If you like pre-made costumes, here is are some Scooby Doo options. And really Shaggy just needs brown pants and a green v-neck shirt.
20. Tree & TreeHugger
My friend Jessica said, “I have the award for most bizarre 😂 Brent and I dressed up as a ‘Tree and a Tree Hugger’ He literally duck-taped tree branches to his back and pulled on the shirt over it. And I just dressed like a hippie.” I’m liking this clever and easy DIY couple Halloween costume!
21. Princess Bride Wesley & Buttercup
How incredible did my cousin and his wife do at dressing up like Wesley and Buttercup from the awesome movie “Princess Bride”? Her DIY red dress with gold sash and crimped blonde hair was all she needed to pull off the look. (If you’d prefer to not DIY, here is a Buttercup dress and wig.) For Wesley, a DIY look could be great, or get the whole ensemble here, but be sure to also grab some black boots and a sword.
