It has been 8 months since we moved into our new home in Rochester, MN. So of course we just got around to doing a quick home office makeover! (There are still pictures to be hung and walls to be painted around the house, but that’ll be a project for another day…or year.) I love how just 5 key things really helped pull this home office together into a cozy, cohesive, and fun room! One item I used in the makeover was so amazing that we teamed up with Brightech and are hosting a giveaway for our readers! (Read below to see how you can win!)

Home Office Makeover Ideas
1. Creative Storage Solutions
In any home office, storage can be an issue. There are papers, books, and miscellaneous items. As a mom, DIY junkie, business owner, and amateur photographer, I have loads of stuff like backdrops, lighting props, microphone, crafting materials, and sentimental items. I solved this storage issue in a couple ways: (1) I used file folders to organize my papers and documents, (2) I used a dresser to organize medium-sized items and sentimental items that cluttered the room, and (3) I positioned my large IKEA table tops (used as backgrounds for some of my images) so that I could hide awkward items behind them. The before and after pictures tell it all!
2. Adequate Lighting
Especially for an office where photography, video chats, or into-the-night work takes place, adequate lighting is a must! I can’t tell you how many nights I have spent losing track of time. Because of that, while natural lighting is just the best, it is also important to have other ways to light the room. I placed a lamp right next to my desk. My LED Mia lamp from Brightech not only lights up my entire office when I work late into the night, it also acts as a sculptural piece.
Don’t you love it?! Don’t you want one?! I’ve got good news for you. We have teamed up with Brightech to give away one of these lamps to our readers! Click here to enter: The DIY Lighthouse + Brightech Giveaway
Here are some rules for the giveaway:
- You must be located in the contiguous United States to enter. Sorry, no shipping overseas or to international addresses.
- The giveaway will close on March 25, 2019.
- One person will be selected at random by Brightech and Brightech is the responsible party for fulfilling and shipping the giveaway lamp after the closing date.
3. Comfortable Seating
Okay. This one was important to me. Not only does the office chair need to be comfortable (because really sometimes getting work done is hard and having an uncomfortable chair just makes it that much more unexciting), but having additional seating is important too. Comfortable seating = inviting. For example, my husband, who spends lots of nights studying for medical residency tests, will now join me in the office because he now has a spot that isn’t just a plot of carpet on the ground. And I have found my creativity spikes when I switch up my immediate environment and take a seat on this mid century tufted sofa instead of in my chair.
4. Repeating Patterns & Colors
If you look around the room, you’ll begin to pick up on some repeating accents. Notice the dots on the removable wallpaper, ceramic decor, and pillow. Aren’t they fun?! There are also stripes in a frame on the bookshelf as well as on a pillow. Gold is a heavy theme can be found throughout the room (picture frames, flower pot, scissors, drawer knobs I swapped out for the old ones, etc.). Pink accents are also scattered throughout the room on the drawers, in the “OK” flower pot, and the computer mouse. These repeating patterns and colors give life to the room and also tie it together.
5. Life-Like Plants
My mom literally had 108 plants on the main floor of our house at one point when I was growing up. She just had a super green thumb. I, on the other hand, cannot grow plants to save my life. Trust me, I’ve tried. Which is why I went with artificial, life-like plants for my office: this mini fiddle leaf tree and this 6′ fiddle leaf fig tree. (Note the woven seagrass belly basket the tree is in…so cute!) They still helped to soften the room and add a gorgeous depth to the space while being almost completely maintenance-free. Win-win for me and the plants!
