It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of bagel and lox. Easily my favorite breakfast, a bagel and lox bar became my birthday breakfast of choice. Yes, lox tend to be pricier than your typical breakfast foods, but for the occasional indulgent treat, it can’t be beat.
What is Bagel and Lox?
Hold up, what are lox? Well, put simply, the amazing thing that is cured/brined/smoked salmon. It is incredibly tender and loaded with flavor. “Bagel and lox” refers to lox resting on a smear of cream cheese on top of a toasted, sliced bagel. Other toppings can also be added. A sprinkle of capers and a few red onion slices are one of my favorite varieties.
How to Make a Bagel and Lox Bar
Here is what you will need to make a successful bagel and lox bar.
Plain Bagels
Of course you will need to have bagels. I think serving plain bagels is best so people can customize the flavor to their liking with the toppings. We get our bagels from Costco because they are pretty inexpensive but still hearty and not too airy. The higher quality the bagel the better though. To make it easier on everyone, pre-slice your bagels so they are ready to toast and add toppings to.
Lox & Other Bagel Toppings
Equally as important are the bagel toppings. I wanted to make a pretty spread of the toppings for our breakfast bar, so I made a charcuterie arrangement of them on a big circular cutting block.
Some necessary toppings include: cream cheese, lox, capers, and red onions slices. Other fun toppings to have so people can customize and try different variations include: thin lemon slices, cucumber slices, avocado tomato slices, and fresh dill.
With the bagels and toppings taken care of, this bagel and lox bar could be good to go. If you want to bulk up the meal a bit more and add other options, here are some suggestions…
Fruit
To help offset the savory goodness of the bagel and lox, I love serving fresh fruit. We had a platter of peaches, grapes, strawberries, and clementines. I think the colors played beautifully together and there was a nice variety of tangy and sweet.
Our friends who joined us for this bagel and lox bar breakfast brought along a heaping bowl of fruit. The more the merrier! You can never have enough fruit, right?!
Veggie Scrambled Eggs
To round out the breakfast and have a hearty option available, we also had a big bowl of veggie scrambled eggs. With mushroom slices, diced green and red pepper, green onion, sharp cheddar cheese, and obviously eggs, these scrambled eggs were all sorts of irresistible.
That sums up our bagel and lox bar breakfast! It was simply delicious, and I’m itching to do another one in a few months. Try it out for yourself and let me know how you like it! 🙂
